Prospect Celebrate 40 Years Of The Robens Report By Issuing Inspectors Stories From The Frontline

This year is 40 years since the Robens Report into workplace health and safety, which resulted in the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Safety Representatives and Safety Committees Regulations 1977.

Since then health & safety regulations have protected people at work and promoted the principle that employers are both morally and legally obliged to look after the health, safety and welfare of their workforce and that everyone deserves a safe and healthy working environment.

People do not go to to work to become ill or be killed!

A further and major development from the Robens Report came the Health and Safety Executive - a body that for the first time in the UK was responsible for policing workplaces and employers in order to ensure they were up to standard and adhered to health and safety law.

Celebrating 40 years from the launch of the Robens report, Prospect, the Trade Union representing HSE inspectors and staff, has compiled 40 stories from the Health and Safety Executive's front line.

'40 at 40' is a collection of contemporary personal insights into some extraordinary and diverse encounters, from people who rarely make their voices public. Compiled from HSE Branch members reported experiences, Prospect thanks them for allowing their experiences at the front line of health and safety enforcement to be shared with a national audience via the Union's own website and that of numerous websites, magazines, newspapers and other media outlets.

Covering major issues such as Asbestos, Construction, Electricity and Gas, Road Safety, Chemicals, Fairgrounds, Factories, Industrial plants and roofing to name just a few; the 40 stories show that health and safety enforcement is much maligned without any evidence whatsoever to justify such attitudes. It simply shows common sense enforcement, some 40 years before David Cameron and his evil cronies decided that profit should be put before lives, and embarked on the telling of total lies about employers finding health and safety a burden and it being a threat to jobs and prosperity.

The stories are both moving and may indeed be shocking to some, but it shows the dedication and professionalism of Prospects members as they go about their daily business of enforcing health and safety law, and saving lives!
